In Nehemiah 11-12 the Temple, The Wall around Jerusalem and the city has been rebuilt and dedicated to the Lord. It is time for people to move into the city. Lots were cast to determine who would be moving back into Jerusalem. How is the church being built today and who determines the make-up of the church?
The answer to the question above is answered in 1 Corinthians 12. As we study this passage of Scripture we need to reflect on how our local congregation is being assembled.
In 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 it is clear that the gifts to be used in the church are given and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The gift is to be used for the spiritual good of all the members of the church. Therefore, I must ask, "What is my gift and am I using it for the good of my brothers and sisters in Christ?" We have to be careful not to promote our own interests and desires at the expense of the other members of the church.
In verse 11 it is the Holy Spirit that is responsible for giving the gift to the individual. Each member needs to accept whatever gift they have and not to become jealous of those who have different gifts.
In verses 12-25 we learn that each person's gift is very important in the functioning of the body. When each one carries out his or her responsibility then no one is overworked and all will be blessed.
Verse 18 states "God has arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as He chose." Each of us are in the church because we sincerely that God has placed us there to serve Him. Many people looking for a church home today are always looking for what the church is going to do for them and their children and the type of music do you sing. Rarely does one ask about the teaching of God's Word and the opportunities available to serve the Lord.
In verse 26 the close fellowship and union of the body is described. We are brothers and sisters in Christ and what happens to one has an affect on the rest of the body. This addresses the love for one another in the body.
Verse 27 states that "Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it." Each member of the church has a very important role in the body of Christ. If you are not fulfilling that responsibility before the Lord I strongly encourage you to seek the Lord to see how you can use your gift for the good of your brothers and sisters in Christ.
