My Savior and Lord

The lesson for today is taken from Hebrews 1:5-14. In this passage the author quotes from 7 Psalms and one passage from 2 Samuel. In quoting these passages he clearly shows that Jesus is much greater than the Angels. We are going to focus on verses 6,8 and 9 as we continue to study about Jesus Christ.

Verse 6 quotes Psalm 89:7 and refers to Jesus as "the firstborn". The significance of the firstborn is that the entire inheritance was entrusted to them. Our entire heavenly inheritance is kept for you and me in heaven by Jesus, 1 Peter 1:3-5. In this life many different things may happen to the inheritance our parents leave to us. But not so concerning our spiritual inheritance. The power of God keeps guard over our inheritance and us. We have eternal security in Jesus Christ.

Verses 8-9 quotes from Psalm 45:6-7. There are four aspects of Jesus in this text.

1. Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. God is always on His throne and in
complete control of all that is going on. Nothing is left to chance; nothing
can come into our lives unless it is allowed by our heavenly Father.

2. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. The Lord rules His
Kingdom without partiality. There are not any shades of right and wrong but
only truth prevails and rules.

3. Hated wickedness. God hates all forms and kinds of wickedness. Even the
wickedness in His people He hates. Not hating us but the sin which so easily
entangles us. So much the more we should keep ourselves pure before the Lord.

4. Therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond
your companions. God has given the victory over sin to His Son Jesus and
through faith in Jesus we also share in that victory, 1 Corinthians 15:55-58.

As we meditate on these four characteristics of Jesus let us praise His holy name for who He is and all He has accomplished on our behalf.
