The second attribute of God that we may observe is His power. There are two words in the Greek language that are sometimes translated as power. One is dunamis and refers to the ability of God. The other is exousia which means authority and that means God has the authority to do what He is doing. As God is the true, living and sovereign God both is these words apply to God, Psalm 24:1-2.
The first indication of God's power is actually seen in the garden while Jesus is praying. The burden of guilt was so great on Jesus that He was in great stress,
Mark 14:33-34. Then as He prayed His sweat became as great drops of blood,
Luke 22:44.
God's power is demonstrated again when in the 9th hour the middle of the day
turned to complete darkness, Mark 15:33.
Once again in the 9th hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "My God, My God,
Why have you forsaken Me?" At this moment God unleashed His holy, righteous and just judgment on His Son because of the sin of His people. Jesus at this moment suffered and satisfied God's wrath on sin so His people will never face the condemnation of God, Romans 8:1. As a believer reads this account in Mark 15:35 he or she would do well to meditate on exactly the suffering the Lord Jesus did on his or her behalf.
A final word from Jesus in John 19:30 is, "It is finished." Meaning the power of God in the Son had enabled the Son "to pay in full" sinful man's debt to God through the disobedience of Adam and the woman in the Garden of Eden. Nothing more is required of man because it was taken care of by Jesus. The individual sinner must now believe that Jesus is the Son of God, indeed God Himself, and that He made full atonement for his sin. Confess the sin, repent and ask Jesus to forgive him and be his Savior and Lord.
Two other effects of the power of God is that it has taken the power to kill out of sin for the believer, 1 Corinthians 15:55-57. The other effect of God's power is that it has transferred the believer to the Kingdom of God thereby breaking the authority of Satan over the believer, Colossians 1:13.
This same power that we have read about today resides in each believer since the Holy Spirit lives in our hearts. This same power enables us to have victory over sin in our lives everyday thereby enabling us to live our lives holy and acceptable to the Lord, Romans 12:1.
May each of us who trust in the Lord experience His power fresh and new today. If you are not a believer I would encourage you to confess your sin to the Lord, repent and ask His forgiveness and you will be forgiven.
